Continue on to visit the Cape Town Jewish Museum, the Holocaust Museum, and the Synagogue – a not-to-be-missed heritage experience. The South African Jewish Museum is a fascinating exploration of how much the Jewish community has contributed to South Africa’s history. The museum is home to wonderful and engaging interactive and audio-visual displays, rare artifacts, and spectacular, history-rich architecture. Situated in the “Museum Mile” district of central Cape Town, it offers visitors a truly unique experience. The Holocaust Museum has a permanent exhibition comprising text and photo panels, archival documents and film footage, multimedia displays, artifacts, and recreated environments. The South African context and aspects are highlighted. The synagogue was consecrated in 1905 when Cape Town boasted its first Jewish mayor, Hyman Liberman, who was also president of the congregation. In 1941, the South African community was reaching its peak of 118 200 Jews, nearly 30 000 of whom lived in the Western Cape, but began a slow decline thereafter. However, since 1998, the congregation once again has flourished with the establishment of the South African Jewish Museum, the Holocaust Centre, the Jacob Gitlin Library, the function halls, and the Community Administrative Centre, and the site now forms a magnificent campus that has brought a new spirit back to the area where it all began. Recommend lunch at Café Riteve Kosher Restaurant – own account. The restaurant is 10 am to 4 pm Sunday – Thursday, and 10 am to 2 pm on a Friday.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve prides itself on presenting a wildlife interaction that is sure to be the highlight of your stay. Coupled with the African horizon and spectacular skies, enjoy game drives through the reserve for an experience of a lifetime. Your safari activities for the next two days begin with an early morning start, as dawn breaks over the African bushveld. Game viewing is carried out morning and evening on game drives when you are driven in your open vehicle (which seats up to 6) over the rolling hills and valleys. If you have a particular species you would like to see, please mention it to your ranger; he will be happy to merge your plans into the group. In the early morning, you will leave before dawn, spending up to 3-4 hours spotting before returning to your lodge for a hearty breakfast. Blankets are supplied for those cold morning starts! The heat of the day is usually spent in the shade, playing tennis, swimming, reading, and of course, enjoying a delicious lunch. Between 4:00 – 5:00 pm, you assemble again for the evening drive. As the animals emerge from their midday cover, you may see elephants browsing, rhino drinking at a waterhole, or perhaps the shy bushbuck motionless in the dense bushveld. At dusk, the Land Rover stops at a panoramic spot for a sundowner and snacks. As the light fades, your ranger will plug in a powerful hand-held light. With its help, you can sweep the veld, seeing first the eyes and then the forms of a variety of nocturnal animals. By 8:00 pm you are back at your lodge where a drink in the bar with your ranger, amid cheerful recollections of the day’s discoveries is followed either by another great meal or a barbecue next to a roaring fire. Finally, a hot shower and a well-earned sleep. Before repeating it again the next day! Generally, you may not leave your vehicle when it is in the reserve. Guided walks can be arranged in the company of your armed ranger, in search of rare animals. These hikes can often be the highlight of your African trip, for it is really only then that you gain a perspective of this great continent. No children under the age of 16 are permitted on bush walks.
After your early morning game drive and a leisurely breakfast, you will bid farewell to South Africa and will be transferred to Port Elizabeth Airport for an onward flight home.
